1 Ministering to Seniors Online: Facebook + YouTube

A recent Neilsen study revealed that in November of 2004, there were 11.3 million active seniors online. In November 2009, that number jumped by 55% to 17.5 million. In addition, they spend more time on the web, totaling an average of 58 hours a month in front of the browser.

With the explosion in the use of Social Media sites over the past 2 years, Facebook and YouTube rank #3 and #4 in the Top Destinations Visited by Persons 65+ in November 2009.

This information is significant to all Ministries; especially those wishing to reach out to Senior Citizens that may not be able to attend Church services on a regular basis.  Please keep this in mind when formulating your Online Ministry Strategies. Facebook and YouTube Ministry can cover a variety of age groups.

Let's not forget anyone - especially Senior Citizens on the Web.

0 Brightkite: A Power Tool for Remote Ministry

Ministry on the mission field or in a remote location is serious and demanding but can be very rewarding.  This type of ministry not only requires that mission persons and volunteers stay connected to what is going on in the local ministry, but also allowing the Ministry to stay connected to their remote activities.  Reporting back to the home church about how God is moving, the changed lives, and the progress of the work is extremely important and useful information. Remote volunteers also need this type of communication to stay on one accord.

In today's society, it is easy to keep the home organizations or church updated via email,  social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, and Flickr (for posting photographs).

Brightkite, which includes both a web-based and mobile application for Android, Blackberry, iPhone, allows remote users to post status updates that includes pictures, text, and a location-based check-in simultaneously to Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, and Fire Eagle. Brightkite is a good tool for updating multiple social media sites via a mobile device.

Other Brightkite features include allowing you to see what others on your list on doing and receive their status updates and photos.  This is useful for volunteers and others to communicate while out on the mission field.

This application will not replace the current mobile clients for Facebook and Twitter but is a good add-on application to be used in combination or as a supplement.

If you are currently using Brightkite in your Ministry, please let us know how you are using it and your thoughts.

0 New Twitter Mobile Site Preview

Using Twitter for Ministry? Check out the new Twitter mobile website @ http://mobile.twitter.com.  Since it’s a preview, the new mobile client will not replace the m.twitter.com

I was able to access the site from my Android device.  It has the basics: recent tweets received on the home page, Mentions, Favs, and Messages.  You can even Reply and Retweet messages.

Let me know your thoughts on it...

0 Add Directions to your Ministry Page

Every Ministry wants to see visitors attending their weekly services. But how can they visit if they cannot find you? Adding directions to your site is a great tool to assist visitors in locating your Church.

Tools such as Google Maps will allow you to create Maps that can be easily embedded into your site. The maps can be created with the location of your Church as the ending destination. Visitors would simply enter their starting location and the maps will provide clear, turn-by-turn directions to your Ministry.

To embedded a Google Map into your site, here are the instructions:

1) Search for a location on maps.google.com

2) Specify the map type you desire.  (You can use Map, Satellite, or Terrain view)

3) Click link at the top right corner of the map.

4) Copy and paste to an HTML page to display the map.

5) Your done.  That's it...

Here's the map for the Church that I attend...
